how to display a larger resolution on a comparatively small screen

I've bought a graphics card which is used to professional image processing.
Hence, it could support a high resolution. Now I want it to display in
2560x1600, but my computer display could only display 1680x1050 at most. How
can I display the high resolution without changing a more advanced display?
I remember vaguely that if the resolution is beyond the display's ability,
there's one way to display only one part of the whole desktop image. And by
moving the mouse to the edge of the display, you could change the part which
is displayed. Is that I remembered right? Anyway, how can I achieve my goal
without spending more money buying another bigger display? Please help
me!!!!
Thank you very much!!!

You can only display resolutions supported by a) your monitor and b) the
driver for the video card. If your current display can only display
1680x1050 then that is the maximum resolution that you are going to be able
to achieve without changing to a higher resolution monitor.

For example the PC I am using at the moment is connected to a monitor with a
16:9 aspect ratio 1920 * 1080 however my graphics card can output 16:10
aspect ratio 1920 * 1200 but unless I choose to change my monitor, which is
unlikely as I deliberately chose a 16:9 aspect ratio, there is no way that I
can display 1920x1200. The card actually supports resolutions to 2560x1600,
the same as your card, but that requires use of dual-link DVI.
